Quarlton Guided Walk - Peter Harris

Upcoming Guided Walk - May 2018

23rd May 2018 7:30pm
Meeting place:  Red Lion, Hawkshaw

This event has been cancelled - please check event listing for replacement event

This is the same walk from our 2017 programme, which was unfortunately rained off.  Let's hope for better weather this time.

Quarlton is a remote township in the ancient parish of Bolton-le-Moors. It was the subject of our publication No 21 by Jim Francis.

It is significant for being the ancestral home of the Knowles family who began by working a  local coal seam and by the mid 19th century had developed a coal mining company that was said to be the largest in the world.

This circular walk, from the Red Lion  at Hawkshaw, is a repeat of one carried out 6 years ago.  It passes through some fine countryside, the relics of a small colliery and the possible remains of an ancient burial mound among other things.

The mound in the middle ground is thought to be a Bronze Age burial mound
