This document at Lancashire Archives contains an account of expenditure relating to Turton. The records were kept by an unknown administrator, most likely the steward of the manor for James Chetham Esquire of Turton Tower.
The accounts contain mention of a number of Turton people, and give details of the purchase of various supplies, payments to workers, tax payments, and a robbery at Kearsley Bridge in 1689, amongst other things.
The visits to Etwall in Derbyshire recorded in August 1694 would likely have been for Abigail Chetham to visit her mother's family; her maternal grandfather being Sir Samuel Sleigh, the manorial lord of Etwall.
Sums of money are periodically given for distribution to the poor, and the overseers names can be cross referenced with the list of Turton overseers of the poor: Richard Lowe (1689), John Knowles (1690), John Holt (1691), John Rainford (1692), James Warburton (1693) and Makepeace Mason (1694).
The accounts also record the burial of Mrs Walmsley in 1688, the widow of James Walmsley.
Copies of this document are available for members to view in the TLHS archive, although its contents are reproduced in full below.
