Bradshaw, Harwood and Tottington Archive Material

We have recently been given a small batch of material relating to Bradshaw, Harwood and Tottington.  A summary of the documents, and reproductions of the two old Harwood photographs follow.

Summary of Documents


(a) A copy of 'The New Family Herbal; or Domestic Physician' by William Meyrick, surgeon. Printed by Thomas Pearson, Birmingham, 1790.  Name written in pencil on cover page 'Frank Street, Finney Cote Farm, Hawkshaw, Bury'.  The book is on poor condition and cover is missing.

(b) Duplicate of Deed of Defeasance between Mr Leitch & anr. to Mr Saml: Pilling,  6th May 1791.  Relating to mortgage of Phinney Cote for £300.  (1) Reverend John Holmes of White Chapel in Middlesex, son and heir of Reverend John Holmes of Haslingden, deceased, Clerk, and Alice his wife, deceased, (2) Samuel Pilling of Hawkshaw Lane, yeoman, (3) Alexander Leitch of Middleton, chapman and Champion Bray of Middleton, cotton manufacturer

(c) Transfer of Mortgage - Phinny Cote, Tottington.  (1) Reverend John Holmes, (2) Samuel Pilling of Hawkshaw Lane within Tottington, yeoman, (3) Lawrence Brandwood, by surrender 6th May 1791, to the use of (4) Alexander Leitch of Middleton, chapman, since deceased and (5) Champion Bray then of Middleton, Cotton Manufacturer, but now of the Parish of Hope in the County of Derby, Gentleman, subject to a payment of £300 to (2) by (4) and (5), who were trustees under the marriage settlement of Reverend James Archer of Middleton, clerk, and Elizabeth his wife, on around 1791.  (2) was unable to pay the mortgage, so borrowed £500 from (6) James Elton of Holcombe.  (5) acknowledges payment of £300 by (6).  Messuage, dwelling house and tenement known as Phinny Cote.  28th May 1806.

(d) Abstract of title to an Estate situate in Birch hey within the manor of Tottington between 1733 and 1822.

(e) 'To the use of Mr George Haworth'.  In consideration of £250 to (1) Thomas Pennington of Bolton, Cotton spinner, lent by (2) George Haworth of Chadderton Hey, gentleman.  Also, £200 also advanced some time ago to be secured by indenture 3rd February last past, between (1) and (2) where the premises described below were demised as security for repayment.  5s payment to Betty the wife of (1) by (2).  One messuage, one cottage, one barn and other buildings and four acres of land at Birch Hey, heretofore purchased from Samuel Pilling of Tottington, yeoman, late in the occupation of Edmund Hamer, but now George Turner.  Secondly, a piece of land, recently measured and fenced off, corner of certain close called Low Meadow, late parcel of a tenement in Tottington called Little Holcombe.  Subject to surrender 13th October 1792 made to Edmund Hamer.  31st May 1824.

(f) Copy of letter of administration - to Rachel Entwisle and Alice Entwisle, nieces of Thomas Grimes (deceased intestate) late of Bradshaw, bachelor, deceased without parent James Grime, brother to the deceased, and former administrator, leaving goods unadministered.  October 1837.

(g) Cash Account in the Executorship of Ellis Chanter Esquire.  Funeral expenses, executorship expenses, debts, mortgages, shares, rents and payment of legacies to various family members (Chantler, Street, Ramsbottom, Hamer, Rothwell). October 1842 - October 1859.  [Note: Ellis Chantler (1780 - 1842) of Elton, Cotton Manufacturer, purchased Thomas Parker's property in Bradshaw in 1830 (Brown Barn, Bradshaw Head and Walsh Fold), as covered in our Bradshaw Estate publication.]

(h) Arthur Bailey & Sons.  Solicitors account to Mrs Street relating to work on her behalf on various matters, including Grimes Buildings in Bradshaw. 1898-1899.

(i) Nursing certificates x3.  Awarded to Margaret Ethel Bleakley by the Union of Lancashire and Cheshire Institutes.  Sick nursing - second class.  Municipal evening classes at Bury. 1917.
